Argentona Water Jug Museum facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Argentona Water Jug Museum (called Museu del Càntir d'Argentona in Catalan) is a special place in Barcelona, Spain. It first opened in 1975, but its current building has been welcoming visitors since July 20, 2000.

This museum has an interesting history! It all started with the Water Jug Festival, which happens every year on August 4th. This festival has been celebrated since 1951, but its roots go way back to the 1600s. Back then, the town of Argentona made a promise to Saint Dominic, who is known as the patron saint of water. They promised to celebrate him if he protected them from a serious sickness.

Every year, around the time of the Water Jug Festival, the museum also hosts the International Ceramic and Pottery Festival. The dates change a bit depending on when August 4th falls. This festival helps share and protect old traditions of pottery making, and also shows off new and exciting ceramic art.

What You'll See at the Museum

The museum has a huge collection of more than 3,000 water vessels! These are all kinds of jugs and containers used to hold water.

Exploring the Main Collection

The main part of the museum shows you the whole world of these water jugs. You can learn about their history, different types of jugs, and how they were made. It's like a journey through time to see how people carried and stored water.

Picasso's Special Corner

On the second floor, you'll find special exhibitions that focus on one topic. Since July 2006, there's been a special area called the Espai Picasso (Picasso Area). Here, you can see four water jugs made by the famous artist Pablo Picasso. This section also explains how Picasso was connected to ceramics and how he used clay in his artwork.
