The Arieș river is an important waterway in Transylvania, Romania. It flows into the Mureș River as a left tributary. A tributary is a smaller river or stream that flows into a larger river. The Arieș joins the Mureș near Gura Arieșului.

The Arieș river is about 166 kilometers (103 miles) long. Its drainage basin covers an area of 3,005 square kilometers (1,160 square miles). This means it collects water from a very large area.

Most people think the name "Arieș" means "Gold River." This name probably comes from the Latin word "Aureus," which means "golden." The Hungarian name for the river, "Aranyos," also means "Golden." This name was first written down in the year 1177.

Journey of the Arieș River

The Arieș river starts in the Bihor Mountains. These mountains are part of the Apuseni Mountains, also known as "The Western Mountains." The river begins when two smaller rivers, the Arieșul Mare and the Arieșul Mic, join together. This happens near the village of Mihoești.

The Arieș flows through two counties in Romania: Alba and Cluj. It eventually flows into the Mureș River near the village of Gura Arieșului. This spot is close to the town of Luduș.

Towns Along the Arieș

Several towns are located along the Arieș river. These include Câmpeni, Baia de Arieș, Turda, and Câmpia Turzii. These towns have grown up around the river.

The Golden Valley: Țara Moților

The upper part of the Arieș river valley is called Țara Moților. This is a beautiful, traditional region. It is also famous for its mining history. Places like Roșia Montană in this area were rich in gold, silver, and even uranium. People have been mining here since ancient times, even before the Roman Empire arrived. The Romans were very interested in these mines, which led to their conquest of the area.
