Transylvania facts for kids

Transylvania is a historical region located in Central Europe. It has a long and interesting past. This land was once part of Hungary. It was also an independent principality for a time. At different points in history, it belonged to the Ottoman Empire or was a province of Austria-Hungary. Since 1918, Transylvania has been a part of Romania.
Where is Transylvania?
Transylvania is surrounded by natural borders. The Siret River forms its eastern edge. The Tisza River is to the west and north. To the south, the mighty Carpathian Mountains create a natural boundary.
Main Cities
Cluj-Napoca is Transylvania's largest city. Many people see it as the region's unofficial capital. However, Transylvania was also ruled from Alba Iulia when it was connected to the Ottoman Empire. The main assembly, called the Transylvanian Diet, even moved to Sibiu for a while in the 1800s.
Legends and Stories
In popular culture, Transylvania is famous for being the home of Count Dracula. This vampire story was written by Bram Stoker. It is based on a local nobleman named Vlad III the Impaler. He was known for his very strict rule. Another famous person connected to the region was Elizabeth Báthory.
