Aristede Dejoie was an important businessman and politician in Louisiana. He worked hard to help his community during a time of big changes in American history. He was a member of the Louisiana House of Representatives, which is like a state parliament, from 1872 to 1874 and again from 1877 to 1879. He passed away in 1917.

He also worked as a tax assessor, helping to figure out how much property was worth for taxes. In 1875, he and T. B. Stamps stood up for their civil rights. They bought tickets to a special seating area called the "dress circle" at the Saint Charles Theater in New Orleans. This was a brave act at a time when many places were segregated. He was also the secretary of the Cosmopolitan Insurance Association.

A Life of Service and Business

Aristede Dejoie was a dedicated member of the Republican Party. This was during a time called Reconstruction, right after the American Civil War. During this period, the Republican Party often supported rights for African Americans.

Dejoie represented the city of New Orleans in his political career. In New Orleans, he also owned a bakery and a restaurant. He was a key leader in the local group of the National Negro Business League. This organization helped support Black-owned businesses.

Building a Family Legacy

Aristede Dejoie was the father of Paul Dejoie and C.C. Dejoie. He worked with his sons to build Unity Life Insurance into a very successful company. They faced many challenges, including unfair treatment because of their race, but they still made their business strong and influential.
