Arizona (pronounced a-ri-SOH-na) is a town and a larger area called a municipality in Honduras. It is located in the department of Atlántida. A municipality is like a local government area, and a department is similar to a state or province.
As of 2020, about 25,320 people live in the Arizona municipality. Around 12,558 of these people live in the main town area.
Many smaller villages are part of the Arizona municipality. These include Cangelica, Chiquito, El Cedro, El Coco, El Retiro, Hicaque, Jilamo, Las Palmas, Los Bolos, Matarras, Mezapa, Mojiman, Oropendolas, Planes de Hicaque, Quebradas de Arena, Santa Maria, Uluasito, and Zapote.
History of Arizona
Something important happened in Arizona on October 29, 2022. The local government, known as the municipality, held a public meeting called an "open council." During this meeting, they made a big decision.
They voted against building a new hydroelectric power plant. This type of plant uses the power of moving water to create electricity. They also decided against giving permission, called "concessions," for "model cities" and mining projects.
- Model cities are special areas where new cities are planned and built, often with different rules to encourage business.
- Mining projects involve digging into the earth to find valuable minerals or resources.
The people of Arizona, through their local government, chose to protect their region from these large-scale projects. This shows how local communities can make important choices about their environment and future.
