Tropical rainforest climate facts for kids
A tropical rainforest climate is a type of tropical climate often found close to the equator, usually within 10 to 15 degrees of it. These areas are known for being hot, very humid, and wet all year round. They have high average temperatures and not much change in temperature throughout the year. A lot of rain falls annually, usually more than 2000mm, spread out over all months. Scientists often call this climate type Af in the Köppen climate classification system.

What is a Tropical Rainforest Climate?
Tropical rainforests have a special kind of tropical climate where there is no dry season. This means that every single month gets at least 60 millimeters (about 2.4 inches) of rain. Unlike many other places, there aren't clear wet or dry times of the year because it rains a lot all the time. One day in a tropical rainforest climate can feel very much like the next. The temperature usually changes more between day and night than it does from one month to another throughout the year.
Equatorial Climates vs. Tropical Trade-Wind Climates
Sometimes, tropical rainforest climates are called equatorial climates. This happens when they are mostly affected by something called the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ). These areas are usually very close to the equator and don't often have strong storms like cyclones.
Other times, these climates are more affected by "trade winds." These are steady winds that blow in certain directions. When trade winds are stronger than the ITCZ, the climates are called tropical trade-wind climates. These are often a bit further from the equator. In these windy areas, the rainforest plants might be a bit different. They need to be strong enough to handle the constant winds and tropical storms.
