Arkadij Naiditsch (born October 25, 1985) is a talented chess player. He holds the highest title in chess, a Grandmaster. He was born in Latvia and has represented several countries during his career. These include Latvia, Germany, and Azerbaijan. Since 2024, he has been playing for Bulgaria.

Chess Journey
Arkadij Naiditsch started playing chess at a young age. He quickly showed great skill.
Early Success
- In 1995, when he was just 10 years old, Arkadij won the European Under-10 championship. This big win happened in Verdun.
Major Tournament Wins
- In 2005, Arkadij won the Dortmund Sparkassen Tournament. He beat many famous and highly-ranked players. Some of these players included Veselin Topalov and Vladimir Kramnik.
- In 2007, he became the champion of Germany. He won the German national championship in Bad Königshofen.
- In 2011, Arkadij won the 15th International Neckar Open. He scored an amazing 8½ points out of 9 games. This win helped him reach a very high Elo rating of over 2700. An Elo rating is a system that measures a player's skill level.
- Also in 2011, he played for the German team. They won the gold medal at the European Team Chess Championship. Arkadij played on the top board, which is usually for the strongest player.
More Victories
- In 2013, Arkadij won the Grandmaster Group B at the Tata Steel Chess Tournament. This tournament is one of the most important in chess. Winning this group allowed him to play in the main 'Tata Steel Masters' tournament the next year.
- In August 2014, he had a very exciting win. He beat the World Champion, Magnus Carlsen, while playing for Germany at the 41st Chess Olympiad.
- The next month, Arkadij won the 2nd Grenke Chess Classic tournament. This event took place in Baden-Baden.
- In December 2014, he also won the 38th Zurich Christmas Open.
Recent Achievements
- In January 2015, Arkadij tied for first place at the Masters section of the Basel Chess Festival. He won the tournament because of a better tiebreak score.
- In February 2015, he tied for first with Magnus Carlsen again. This was at the 3rd Grenke Chess Classic. Arkadij finished second after a fast-paced playoff.
- In July 2015, Arkadij decided to represent the Azerbaijani Chess Federation.
- He won the Zurich Christmas Open for the second time in a row in December 2015.
- Just six days later, he also won the Basel Chess Festival for the second year in a row.
- In 2024, Arkadij changed his chess federation again. He now represents Bulgaria. He played for the Bulgarian national team at the 45th Chess Olympiad in Budapest, Hungary.
Personal Life
In October 2014, Arkadij Naiditsch married Yuliya Shvayger. She is also a chess player and holds the title of International Master (IM). As of 2015, Arkadij lives in Baku with his family.
