Arlene Stamp (born in 1938) is a Canadian artist and teacher. She is known for her unique style of art called conceptual art. This means her art often focuses on ideas and concepts more than just the finished artwork itself. Arlene Stamp lives and works in Calgary, Alberta.
Her Artistic Journey
Arlene Stamp was born in London, Ontario. She first studied mathematics and graduated from the University of Western Ontario in 1960. This background in math greatly influenced her art.
Later, she decided to study art. She attended the Alberta College of Art and Design from 1974 to 1976. She also studied at the University of Calgary from 1979 to 1980.
Art Inspired by Math
Arlene Stamp is famous for her "mathematical-abstract paintings." These are artworks that use ideas from math. She often creates pieces based on math rules and repeating patterns.
For example, she has made art series about different things. These include the work of another artist named Gladys Johnston. She also explored the color red and the grid patterns you might see on floor tiles.
Her art has been shown in many places across Canada. She has also worked with other artists. Together, they create special art installations and pieces made for specific locations. In 2013, Nickle Galleries in Calgary held a special show. It looked back at 30 years of Stamp's art, including paintings, drawings, and installations.
Teaching and Recognition
Besides being an artist, Arlene Stamp has taught at art schools all over Canada. She has also been an artist-in-residence. This means she spent time working in studios at places like the Emma Lake Artists' Workshops in 1977. She also worked at the Banff Centre for continuing education in 1979.
In 2007, Arlene Stamp became a member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts. This is a special honor for artists in Canada.
