The Arlington Green Covered Bridge is a special kind of covered bridge found near Arlington, Vermont. It crosses the Batten Kill river. This historic bridge was built way back in 1852.

It uses a unique design called a Town lattice truss. This means its sides are made of many crisscrossing wooden planks. The bridge was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. It is one of the oldest bridges still standing in Vermont today.

What Makes This Bridge Special?

The Arlington Green Covered Bridge is located in a small area called West Arlington. It helps people cross the Batten Kill river, just south of Route 313. It's a single-span bridge, meaning it crosses the river with one long section.

Bridge Size and Design

This bridge is about 80 feet (24 m) long. That's like the length of two school buses! It is 17.5 feet (5.3 m) wide, but the part cars drive on is only 14 feet (4.3 m) wide. This means only one car can cross at a time.

The bridge rests on strong stone supports called abutments. The northern support has been covered with concrete over time. You might also notice cables near the corners. These are called guying cables and help keep the bridge stable.

Inside and Out

The outside of the bridge is covered with vertical wooden boards. This protects the inside from weather. The roof is made of metal. If you look closely, you'll see five small square openings on each side. These let in light and air.

A Look Back in Time

The Arlington Green Covered Bridge was built in 1852. This makes it one of Vermont's oldest covered bridges that is still in use. What's really cool is that it hasn't had many modern upgrades. Many other old bridges have needed extra supports added over the years.

Facing the Storm

On August 28, 2011, a big storm called Hurricane Irene caused a lot of flooding. The Arlington Green Covered Bridge was damaged by the high water. But don't worry! Workers fixed the bridge in the months after the storm. It was soon reopened for traffic.
