Arm is a small, unincorporated community located in Lawrence County, Mississippi, United States. An unincorporated community is a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. Arm is situated about 6.4 kilometers (4 miles) east-southeast of Monticello, right on Mississippi Highway 43.
History of Arm
Arm began as a community in 1905. It was founded when the Gulf and Ship Island Railroad was built through the area. The community was named after W.J. Armstrong, who owned land nearby.
Early Growth and Sawmills
When the railroad arrived, a sawmill was built in Arm. This led to the growth of a small village. For a while, the community thrived because of the sawmill. By 1910, Arm was home to two sawmills, five general stores, and even a doctor. The number of sawmills grew to four by 1919.
Arm as a Farming Center
After the sawmills were eventually removed, Arm changed. It became a center for farming. Today, the community has one church and a store that also serves as a post office.
