Armand-Claude Poute de Nieuil (born 22 July 1730 – died 19 April 1806) was a French Navy officer. He was known for his service during the American Revolutionary War. He passed away in Poitiers, France, at the age of 75.

Life and Early Career
Armand-Claude Poute de Nieuil was born to Anne Louis de la Rochefoucauld and Jean-Baptiste Poute de Nieuil.
He began his naval career on 22 January 1746. He joined the French Navy as a Garde-Marine, which was a rank for young officers in training.
Nieuil quickly moved up the ranks. He became an Ensign in 1751 and a Lieutenant in 1757. By 1772, he was promoted to Captain.
Leading Ships in Battle
In 1776, Captain Nieuil took command of the 36-gun frigate Terpsichore. He was stationed at Rochefort, France, as part of a group of ships led by Admiral Du Chaffault.
Nieuil showed his skill in 1778. He commanded the 70-gun ship Dauphin Royal. This ship was a main vessel in a division of the fleet led by Admiral Orvilliers.
He played a part in the Battle of Ushant on 27 July 1778. His performance earned him praise from Admiral Orvilliers.
In 1779, Nieuil moved to command the 74-gun ship Citoyen. This ship was also a lead vessel in Admiral Orvilliers' fleet.
He continued to command Citoyen in 1780 under Admiral Guichen. He led his ship in the Battle of Martinique on 17 April 1780.
In 1782, Nieuil commanded another 74-gun ship, the Robuste. He captained this ship during the Battle of Cape Spartel on 20 October 1782.
Later Career and Honors
In 1784, Armand-Claude Poute de Nieuil was promoted to Chef d'escadre. This was a high rank, similar to a commodore or a junior admiral.
In 1787, Nieuil was put in charge of the Escadre d'évolution. This was a special training squadron for the French Navy. He sailed from Brest in June, visited Lisbon, and returned in August. His flag was on the 74-gun ship Superbe.
The next year, 1788, Nieuil commanded a squadron of ships near Tunis. His flag was on the ship Illustre.
In 1788, he received a special honor. He was made a Knight in the Order of Saint Louis. This was a French military award for bravery and service.
By 1790, he was commanding a division of ships in Toulon. He continued to rise in rank, becoming a Contre-amiral (Rear-Admiral) in 1792.
