The Armagomphus armiger, also known as the armourtail, is a special type of dragonfly. It belongs to the Gomphidae family, which are often called "clubtail" dragonflies because of their unique tail shapes. This particular dragonfly is the only known species in its group, called a monotypic genus (meaning it's the only one of its kind in its specific genus, Armagomphus).

The armourtail dragonfly is a fascinating insect. It was first officially described in 1913 by Robert John Tillyard, a famous entomologist who studied insects. This dragonfly is quite small, making it a bit harder to spot in its natural home.

Where Does the Armourtail Live?

The armourtail dragonfly is endemic to south-western Australia. This means you can only find it living naturally in this specific part of the world. It makes its home near fresh water, usually in streams and rivers. These waterways provide the perfect environment for the dragonfly to hunt and lay its eggs.

What Does the Armourtail Look Like?

This small dragonfly has a striking appearance. Its body is marked with a mix of black and yellow colors. These patterns help it blend in with its surroundings, especially when it's resting on plants near the water. Like all dragonflies, it has two pairs of strong, clear wings that allow it to fly quickly and gracefully.

Why Is the Armourtail Special?

The armourtail is unique because it's the only species in its entire genus, Armagomphus. This makes it a very important part of the natural world, as it represents a distinct branch of the dragonfly family tree. Sadly, the armourtail is currently listed as "Vulnerable" (VU) by the IUCN, which means its population is decreasing and it faces a high risk of becoming endangered in the wild. Protecting its river and stream habitats is very important to help this special dragonfly survive.
