Museum History

The museum started with something called the "Mytchett Collection." This was a group of important documents gathered at the Historical Museum in Keogh Barracks, beginning in 1952.
Moving to a New Home
The museum moved into the building it occupied for many years in 1981. Later, in 1994, another collection joined it. This was from the Queen Alexandra's Royal Army Nursing Corps Museum, which used to be at the Royal Pavilion, Aldershot.
Name Change
In 2016, the museum changed its name. It went from being the Army Medical Services Museum to the Museum of Military Medicine.
What You Can See
The museum holds collections from several important military groups. These include the Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) and the Queen Alexandra's Royal Army Nursing Corps (QARANC). It also has items from the Royal Army Veterinary Corps (RAVC) and the Royal Army Dental Corps (RADC).
Amazing Collections
When you visit, you can see many interesting things. There are old uniforms and special badges. You'll also find medical, dental, and animal care equipment. The museum even has ambulances and a special train car that was used as a hospital ward.
Medals and Famous Items
One of the most impressive parts is the large collection of medals. This includes 23 of the 29 Victoria Crosses given to the Army Medical Services. The Victoria Cross is the highest award for bravery in the British military. You can also see Florence Nightingale's carriage. She used this carriage during the Crimean War to help carry injured soldiers. The museum also has a shop where you can buy souvenirs.
Museum's New Location
The Museum of Military Medicine has recently moved to a new home. Plans for a new building in Cardiff were approved in December 2020. The museum at Keogh Barracks closed on August 2, 2025. The collection is now being moved to its new building at Whittington Barracks. The full relocation is expected to be complete by the end of 2025.
