Arnaldo Putzu (born August 6, 1927 – died September 1, 2012) was a talented Italian artist. He became famous for creating amazing posters for movies, especially for Italian and British films. You might know his work from films like Get Carter and the fun Carry On movies.

Arnaldo Putzu: A Life in Art

Arnaldo Putzu was born in Rome, Italy. His father was an officer in the Italian navy. Arnaldo loved art and studied it at the Rome Academy.

Starting His Career

In 1948, while working as an illustrator in Milan, Arnaldo met another famous poster artist named Enrico de Seta. De Seta saw Arnaldo's talent and brought him to Rome. There, Arnaldo began working in Italy's exciting film industry.

After four years, Putzu decided to open his own art studio. He worked for many different artists. One of them was Augusto Favalli, who managed many artists at the Cinecittà film studios.

Working on British Films

A manager from the Rank Organisation in Rome was very impressed by the posters from Studio Favalli. They saw a chance to get great posters for their British films. So, Rank started hiring Italian artists to create movie posters.

At first, a creative director named Eric Pulford would fly between Rome and Britain. He would bring the artwork to the artists. But by the late 1950s, some Italian artists, like Renato Fratini, moved to live and work in Great Britain.

Putzu started working with Pulford in the late 1950s. His very first British poster was for the film The Secret Place (1957). In 1967, Putzu moved to Britain. His first poster there was for the comedy film The Magnificent Two, starring Morecambe and Wise. He had actually designed their earlier film poster for That Riviera Touch while still in Rome.

Famous Movie Posters

Arnaldo Putzu created posters for many different types of movies. He designed posters for the popular Carry On film series. He also worked on horror films from Hammer Films, such as Creatures the World Forgot and The Legend of the 7 Golden Vampires.

One interesting detail is his poster for Get Carter. He drew the main actor, Michael Caine, wearing a pink tie and a floral jacket. But Michael Caine never actually wore those clothes in the movie!

Beyond Film Posters

From 1973 to 1981, Putzu also illustrated the covers for a children's TV magazine called Look-In. He enjoyed this regular work. The magazine's offices were close to his studio. Eventually, photos replaced his painted covers.

By the end of the 1970s, movie posters started using retouched photographs instead of paintings. This was often cheaper. Arnaldo Putzu returned to Rome in October 1985. In his later years, he found that painting helped him with his memory.
