Eric Morecambe (born John Eric Bartholomew, 14 May 1926 – 28 May 1984) and Ernie Wise (born Ernest Wiseman, 27 November 1925 – 21 March 1999) were a super famous English comedy duo. They were known as Morecambe and Wise or sometimes Eric and Ernie. They made people laugh for many years, from 1941 until Eric passed away in 1984.
They worked in many areas like live shows, radio, movies, and especially television. Many people say they were the best and most loved comedy duo Britain has ever seen.
The Morecambe and Wise Show
Their main TV show was called The Morecambe and Wise Show. It was very popular. In 2000, experts voted it the 14th greatest British TV show ever. In 2006, the public voted them number 2 in a poll of TV's 50 Greatest Stars.
Their early life and career were shown in a TV movie called Eric and Ernie in 2011. Later, their 1970s career was featured in another TV movie, Eric, Ernie and Me, in 2017.
Awards and Recognition
Morecambe and Wise received many special awards for their comedy.
- In 1976, they were both given the OBE. This is a special award from the Queen for their great work.
- After they passed away, in 1999, they received the BAFTA Fellowship. This is a very high honour from the British Academy of Film and Television Arts.
- In 2013, a special blue plaque was put up at Teddington Studios. This is where they filmed their last four TV series. Blue plaques mark places where famous people lived or worked.
