Scientific classification |
Arnicastrum guerrerense (sometimes called A. guerrense) is a special plant with bright yellow flowers. It's a type of perennial herb, which means it lives for more than two years. This plant belongs to the Asteraceae family, also known as the daisy family. You can find it growing in Mexico.
Where it was Found
Scientists first discovered Arnicastrum guerrerense in 1983. They found it high up in the mountains of Sierra Madre del Sur. These mountains are located in the Mexican state of Guerrero. The plant was growing at a very high altitude, about 3,200 meters (10,500 feet) above sea level.
Its Mountain Home
The plant lives in a coniferous forest. This type of forest has trees that stay green all year, like pine and fir trees. The main trees in this forest are Pinus hartwegii (a type of pine) and Abies (fir trees). Even though it's only known from Mexico, the plant is not considered "endemic" to Mexico. This means it might be found in other places too, but it hasn't been discovered there yet.
What is its Protection Status?
Arnicastrum guerrerense is listed on Mexico's official "red list" of plants. This list helps keep track of plants that need special attention. For A. guerrerense, it means the plant needs "special protection." This helps make sure it continues to grow and thrive in its natural home.
