Running for Vice President
In the 2004 U.S. presidential election, Arrin Hawkins was chosen to be the candidate for Vice President of the United States for the Socialist Workers Party. She ran alongside Róger Calero, who was the presidential candidate.
Why She Couldn't Be on All Ballots
To be the Vice President of the United States, a person must be at least 35 years old. Arrin Hawkins was not old enough to meet this rule by the time of the inauguration. Because of this, some states did not allow her name to be printed on the ballot. A ballot is the paper or electronic form where you cast your vote.
In those states, another person named Margaret Trowe took her place on the ballot. Margaret Trowe had been the Socialist Workers Party's vice-presidential candidate in the 2000 election. Róger Calero, the presidential candidate, also needed someone to stand in for him in some states because he was born in Nicaragua.

The candidates running with Róger Calero received 5,150 votes. Another candidate from the same party, James Harris, also ran in some states and received 2,424 votes.
