Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Arrowsmiths is what we call a ghost town in Defiance County, Ohio, United States. A ghost town is a place that used to be a busy community but is now mostly empty, often because people moved away when jobs or resources disappeared.

What is Arrowsmiths?

Arrowsmiths was once a small settlement located in Farmer Township. It's known as a ghost town because it no longer has a living community. These towns often have old buildings or just empty land where people once lived and worked.

History of Arrowsmiths

Arrowsmiths began to grow around a mill. A man named Mr. Arrowsmith operated this mill on a waterway called Lost Creek. This mill was an important part of the community until about 1846.

The town also had its own post office. The Arrowsmiths post office first opened in 1843. It helped people send and receive letters and packages, connecting the small community to the rest of the world. However, the post office eventually closed down in 1866. After the mill stopped working and the post office closed, people likely started moving away, leading to the town becoming deserted.
