Carrington played in the American Tennis Association (ATA). The ATA was a tennis organization for African-American players. It was similar to the USTA (United States Tennis Association).

In 1972, Arthur Carrington reached the finals of the ATA tournament. He finished as the runner-up that year. His final match against Horace Reid was a special moment. It was the first ATA final ever shown on television. This match was broadcast on Boston's WGBH-TV.

The very next year, in 1973, Carrington worked hard and won the ATA title. This was a big achievement in his career.
