Horace Reid (born June 14, 1955) is an American former professional tennis player. He was known for his strong junior career and for being a talented player who competed on the professional tennis tour.
Early Life and Junior Tennis
Horace Reid grew up in Atlanta, Georgia. While he was a student at Washington High School, he won two State AAA singles championships. This means he was the best high school tennis player in his division for the entire state!
He was ranked 10th in the United States for players in the 14-and-under age group. Horace Reid also made history by becoming the first African American to win a Georgia state junior tennis title.
College and Professional Career
In 1972, Horace Reid won the singles championship at the American Tennis Association tournament. He was seen as a promising young player, and even received financial help from Arthur Ashe. Arthur Ashe was a famous tennis player who was once ranked number one in the world.
Horace Reid received a scholarship to attend UCLA, a well-known university. There, he played tennis for the Bruins team. He played as the No. 4 singles player and the No. 1 doubles player for the team. He later left UCLA during his second year.
After his time at UCLA, Reid started playing tennis professionally. This means he competed in tournaments for money. He reached his highest singles world ranking at No. 272. He also played in the main doubles tournaments at the US Open, which is one of the biggest tennis events in the world.
