Horace Reid's Early Tennis Journey
Horace grew up in Atlanta, Georgia. He was a talented tennis player from a young age. While at Washington High School, he won two big state championships. He was even ranked among the top 10 players in the U.S. for his age group (14 and under). Horace made history by being the first African American to win a junior state title in Georgia.
College Tennis and Mentorship
In 1972, Horace won a major tennis championship. It was the singles title at the American Tennis Association tournament. He was seen as a promising young player. The famous tennis star Arthur Ashe helped Horace a lot. Ashe, who was once the world's number one player, gave Horace financial support.
Horace went to UCLA on a scholarship. He played tennis for the Bruins team. He played as the number four singles player. He was also the number one doubles player for the team. He left college during his second year.
