Arthur James Evans (born March 27, 1942 – died December 21, 2024) was an American actor. He appeared in many movies and TV shows. His acting career lasted for over three decades.
Early Life
Evans was born in Berkeley, California. His birthday was March 27, 1942.
Acting Career
Art Evans started his acting journey almost 40 years ago. He began at the Frank Silvera's Theater of Being in Los Angeles. He had a main role in a play called The Amen Corner. This play later moved to Broadway in 1965.
His first movie appearance was in Claudine in 1974. His first role where he was named in the credits was in the TV show Chico and the Man. This was in 1976. Art Evans was also good at playing many musical instruments. This skill helped him play the musician Blind Lemon Jefferson in the movie Leadbelly (1976).
One of Evans's early movie roles was in the John Carpenter film Christine. This movie was based on a book by Stephen King. Evans played a car factory worker. He was the first person to be found dead after flicking cigar ash on the car named Christine.
In 1984, Evans acted in the movie A Soldier's Story. This drama featured many famous African-American actors. He played a character named Wilkie. He is perhaps best known for his role as Leslie Barnes in the action movie Die Hard 2 (1990). In this film, he played the chief engineer at Dulles International Airport. He helped LAPD detective John McClane, played by Bruce Willis. Together, they worked to stop terrorists from crashing planes.
Evans also appeared in many other movies. These include Fright Night (1985), Ruthless People (1986), and School Daze (1988). He was also in The Mighty Quinn (1989) and Trespass (1992).
On television, he appeared in shows like M*A*S*H, Hill Street Blues, and The X-Files. He was also on Monk and Family Matters. In Family Matters, he played a man who said he was Santa Claus. His most famous TV role was on A Different World. He played Mr. Johnson, who was the father of Ron Johnson.
Art Evans also appeared in a music video. He was in Stevie Wonder's video for the song "Go Home".
Later in his career, Evans continued acting. In 2010, he was in Anderson's Cross. He played the grandfather of the main character. In 2011, he was a guest star on the TV show Last Man Standing. This was for an episode called "Grandparents Day".
Death
Art Evans passed away in Los Angeles. He died on December 21, 2024. He was 82 years old.
