Exploring Arta's Famous Landmarks
Arta is full of amazing historical sites to explore. You can find ancient ruins and beautiful old churches. These landmarks tell the story of the city's long history.
Ancient Wonders of Arta
The city of Arta is built on top of an ancient city called Ambracia. When you visit, you can still see parts of its old walls. There are also ruins of an ancient temple dedicated to the Greek god Apollo. You can even find a small ancient theatre and parts of an old cemetery. These sites show what life was like thousands of years ago!
Byzantine Buildings and More
The strong walls around Arta were first built in the early 1200s. They were made by a leader named Michael I Komnenos Doukas. However, most of what you see today was built later. Sadly, old palaces from the Byzantine period are gone. But Arta still has many beautiful churches from that time.
The most important Byzantine church is the Church of the Paregoretissa. It was built around 1290 by Nikephoros I Komnenos Doukas and his wife Anna Palaiologina Kantakouzene. Another important church is the Church of the Kato Panagia, built by Nikephoros I's father, Michael II Komnenos Doukas.
You can also visit the Monastery of Saint Theodora. This monastery holds the tomb of the city's special protector, Theodora of Arta. Many other churches from the 800s and 900s are still standing in and around Arta. These include Saint Basil of the Bridge, Saint Demetrios of Katsoures, and the Panagia Blacherna monastery.
