Arthur Alexander Dalzell (born September 15, 1799, died April 28, 1875) was a Scottish nobleman and a high-ranking soldier. He became the 9th Earl of Carnwath. His father was Robert Alexander Dalzell, the 6th Earl of Carnwath.
A Life in the Army
Arthur Dalzell had a long and important career in the British Army. He served as a lieutenant-colonel for the 48th (Northamptonshire) Regiment of Foot. This role lasted from 1841 to 1853.
Important Positions
In 1854, he took on a new role. He became the Assistant Secretary for Scotland. Later, in April 1861, he was made the General Officer Commanding the South-Eastern District. This meant he was in charge of military forces in that area.
Becoming a General and Earl
Arthur Dalzell was promoted to the rank of general in 1873. This is a very high rank in the army. In the same year, he also inherited important family titles. He became the Earl of Carnwath after his nephew, Henry Arthur Hew Dalzell, passed away.
Lord Carnwath, as he was then known, died on April 28, 1875, in London. He was 75 years old and had never married. His younger brother, Harry Burrard Dalzell, inherited his titles.
