History of the Cohn House
The Arthur B. Cohn House is named after Arthur Benjamin Cohn (1871–1938). He lived in this house starting in 1905. Mr. Cohn was a very important person. He was the personal accountant for William Marsh Rice. William Marsh Rice was the founder of Rice University.
Arthur Cohn and Rice University
Arthur Cohn played a big part in starting Rice University. In 1905, the leaders of Rice University hired him. He became a full-time staff member. This shows how much they trusted him.
The House's Original Location
The house was first built at 1711 Rusk Avenue. This land had an older house on it from the 1860s. That house belonged to Winifred Browne. Some people believe parts of the old Browne house were used to build the Cohn House. For example, the kitchen floor might be from around 1870. Old neighbors even called it "the Browne house." They said the front doors and a fireplace might also be from the older building.
The original land for the Cohn House was part of a very old survey of Houston. This area was later used for the George R. Brown Convention Center. Because of this, the Cohn House had to be moved to its new spot. Before the convention center was built, archaeologists studied the land in 2003. They wanted to learn more about the history of the area.
