Arthur Cole, 1st Baron Ranelagh facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Arthur Cole, 1st Baron Ranelagh (c.1669 – 5 October 1754), also known as Sir Arthur Cole, Bt, was an Irish politician. He held important roles in the Irish Parliament and was later given a special title.

Who Was Arthur Cole?

Arthur Cole was the oldest son of Sir John Cole, 1st Baronet. His mother was Elizabeth Chichester. She was connected to important families, including the Ranelagh family.

Early Life and Titles

Around 1691, Arthur Cole inherited his father's title, becoming a Baronet. This meant he was called Sir Arthur Cole.

A Career in Politics

In 1692, he became a member of the Irish House of Commons. This was like being a Member of Parliament (MP) in Ireland. He represented the area of Enniskillen until 1695. After that, from 1695 to 1703, he represented Roscommon in the Irish Parliament.

Becoming a Baron

In 1715, Arthur Cole received an even higher title. He was made a Baron Ranelagh in the Peerage of Ireland. This meant he became Lord Ranelagh. This title was given to him after the previous Ranelagh title had ended. It was a way to bring the important Ranelagh name back.

Family Life and Legacy

Lord Ranelagh was married twice. His first wife was Catherine Byron, whom he married in 1692. After she passed away in 1746, he married Selina Bathurst in 1748. Sadly, Lord Ranelagh did not have any children from either marriage. He died in October 1754. Because he had no children, both his baronetcy and his barony titles ended with him.

Remembered in Paris

Even though his titles ended, the name Ranelagh lives on. A street in Paris, France, called Rue de Ranelagh, is named after the Ranelagh title. The nearby Ranelagh metro station, which opened in 1922, also shares this name.
