Arthur Chauncey "Rats" Henderson (born August 29, 1896 – died September 8, 1988) was an American baseball pitcher. He was a talented player in the Negro leagues, which were important baseball leagues for African American players during a time when they were not allowed to play in Major League Baseball. Arthur Henderson played for several teams, including the Lincoln Giants, Richmond Giants, Bacharach Giants, St. Louis Stars, and Detroit Stars.

Who Was Arthur "Rats" Henderson?

Arthur Henderson was born in Henrico County, Virginia, on August 29, 1896. He grew up to become a professional baseball player. As a pitcher, his main job was to throw the baseball to the batter, trying to get them out. He played for many years, showing his skill on the mound.

Playing in the Negro Leagues

Henderson began his professional baseball career in 1922. He first played for the Lincoln Giants and the Richmond Giants. The Negro Leagues were very competitive, featuring some of the best baseball players in the country.

From 1923 to 1929, Arthur Henderson was a key player for the Bacharach Giants. This team was well-known in the Negro Leagues. He finished his career in 1931, playing for both the St. Louis Stars and the Detroit Stars.

A Recognized Baseball Star

Even many years after he stopped playing, Arthur Henderson's talent was remembered. In 1952, when he was 55 years old, he received votes in a special poll. This poll was run by the Pittsburgh Courier newspaper, and it asked players from the Negro Leagues to vote for the best players ever. This shows that his fellow players respected his skills and contributions to the game.
