About Arthur Henry Cole

Arthur was the fourth son of William Cole, 1st Earl of Enniskillen (who died in 1803). His mother was Anne. She was the daughter of Galbraith Lowry-Corry, who was an MP in the Irish Parliament for County Tyrone. Anne was also the sister of Armar Lowry-Corry, 1st Earl Belmore.

Arthur had several older brothers. They included John Cole, 2nd Earl of Enniskillen, Sir Galbraith Lowry Cole, and Rev. William Cole. Arthur studied at Trinity College Dublin.

Time in India

In 1802, Arthur Cole traveled to British India. He worked for the East India Company. Lord Cornwallis described him as "a very fine lad, and modest, and well behaved."

In 1812, Arthur was chosen to be the British Resident in Mysore. This meant he was the main British official there. He worked in Mysore for about 15 years. After this, he returned home to start his career in politics.

Some places in Fraser Town, Bangalore are still named after him today. These include Cole's Park and Cole's Road. He also helped build an Anglican church in Mysore, called St. Bartholomew's Church.

Political Career

In 1828, Arthur Cole was elected as a Member of Parliament (MP). He joined the Conservative Party. He won his seat in a special election after his brother-in-law, Richard Magenis, left Parliament.

On 4 June 1844, Arthur Cole resigned from Parliament. He was not well and decided to step down. He passed away just 12 days later, on 16 June 1844. He was at his home in Manchester Square, Marylebone, and was almost 64 years old. His nephew, Henry Arthur Cole, took his place in Parliament.
