Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Arthur Lynch was an important figure in the history of Galway, a city in Ireland. He served as the 22nd Mayor of Galway and is remembered for a unique reason: he was the very first mayor of the city to pass away while still in office. He died on November 20, 1507.

Who Was Arthur Lynch?

Arthur Lynch was a member of a group known as The Tribes of Galway. These were 14 powerful merchant families who shaped Galway's history for centuries. Being part of one of these families meant he was from a very influential background in the city.

Becoming Mayor of Galway

Arthur Lynch was chosen to be the Mayor of Galway in August 1507. He officially took on the role the very next month. As mayor, he would have been in charge of leading the city and making important decisions for its people.

A Mayor's Term Ends Early

Sadly, Arthur Lynch's time as mayor was very short. He passed away on November 20, 1507, just a few months after being sworn into office. This made him the first Mayor of Galway to die while still serving. It is not known exactly who took over as mayor immediately after him. However, historical records show that Stephen Lynch became mayor for the term of 1508 to 1509.
