Who Was Arthur Perkins?
The house was built in 1915-1916. The architect was Albert Bissell. He built it for Arthur Perkins. Arthur Perkins owned the Rutland Fire Clay Company. Five years earlier, Bissell had built Perkins' factory using fire-resistant materials.
Arthur's father started the company in 1872. At first, they worked with iron ore. But they soon found that clay was a better resource. Arthur Perkins took over the company in 1898. The company's factory burned down in 1902. Its replacement also burned in 1910. These fires made Perkins very interested in building with materials that could resist fire.
That's why his house is built with many fire-resistant materials. For example, the main parts of the porches are made of concrete. Arthur Perkins also served as the mayor of Rutland. He was mayor from 1927 to 1935.
