Early Life and War Service

In November 1942, Arthur Rose Sr. joined the Navy. He served his country during World War II. He was honorably discharged in December 1945. After his service, he focused on his passion for art.

Becoming an Artist

Rose attended Claflin University. He graduated with honors in 1950. He was only the second student there to get an art degree. He wanted to learn even more. So, he went to New York University. There, he studied with famous artists like Hale Woodruff. He earned his Master's Degree in 1952.

Inspiring Young Artists

In 1952, Rose went back to Claflin University. He helped start the school's Department of Art. He was the head of this department until 1976. In 1977, he moved to Voorhees College. He became the Artist in Residence there. He kept teaching until 1991.

Rose cared deeply about his students. He would invite them to his home for meals. He also gave them art supplies. Many of his students became successful artists and teachers. One of his students, Leo Twiggs, even helped create an art program and museum at South Carolina State College.

Today, there is an art museum at Claflin University named after Arthur Rose Sr. This honors his great contributions.
