Arthur James Williams (born November 12, 1964 – died April 2023) was an American professional boxer. He competed in boxing from 1989 to 2010. Arthur Williams was a champion in the cruiserweight division. He held the IBF cruiserweight title from 1998 to 1999. He also fought twice for the WBA cruiserweight title in 1994.
Arthur Williams' Boxing Journey
Arthur Williams started his professional boxing career in 1989. He quickly became a strong fighter. His first big chance for a championship title came in 1994. He fought Orlin Norris for the WBA Cruiserweight Title. Williams lost this fight by a very close decision. Later that year, he had a rematch with Norris. In this second fight, Williams was knocked out in the third round.
Becoming a Champion
Williams worked hard to get another chance at a title. In 1998, he finally got to fight for the IBF Cruiserweight Title. He faced Imamu Mayfield in this important match. Williams won the title by a technical knockout (TKO) in the ninth round. A TKO happens when the referee stops the fight because one boxer cannot continue safely.
However, his time as champion was short. In his very first defense of the title, he lost to an undefeated boxer named Vassiliy Jirov.
Life After Boxing
After his boxing career, Arthur Williams was honored for his achievements. On June 23, 2024, he was inducted into the Florida Boxing Hall of Fame. This special honor recognized his contributions to the sport.
