Boxing Career Highlights
Imamu Mayfield started his professional boxing career in 1994. He quickly became a well-known local fighter in New Jersey. People often saw him fighting in different boxing events across the state.
Winning a Championship Title
In 1997, Mayfield achieved a big goal. He won the IBF Cruiserweight Title. He earned this championship by defeating Uriah Grant.
After winning the title, Mayfield had to defend it. His first defense was in Hull, England. He successfully defended his title by knocking out Terry Dunstan, who had never lost a fight before.
Losing and Regaining Titles
The next year, Mayfield faced a tough challenge. He had to fight Arthur Williams in a mandatory defense. Mayfield lost his IBF Cruiserweight Title to Williams in the ninth round.
In 2000, Mayfield got another chance at a major title. He fought Juan Carlos Gómez for the WBC Cruiserweight Title. However, he lost this fight by knockout in the third round.
Later, Mayfield won the IBF USBA Cruiserweight Title. He achieved this by knocking out Gary Wilcox in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The following year, he lost a fight against Jorge Fernando Castro. This fight was an eliminator to decide who would challenge for the IBF Cruiserweight Title.
Moving to Heavyweight and Back
In 2002, Mayfield decided to move up to the Heavyweight division. This meant he would fight against much larger opponents. In his first heavyweight fight, he won against Peter Ohkello. Ohkello later fought for the WBC Heavyweight Title in 2006.
Mayfield had a draw with Taurus Sykes in 2003. However, he lost to Lawrence Clay-Bey in 2004. After this loss, he moved back down to the Cruiserweight division.
He later moved back to heavyweight again. In 2006, he fought Alexander Povetkin and lost in the third round. He also lost another fight to Johnathon Banks.
Mixed Martial Arts Fight
Besides boxing, Imamu Mayfield also competed in one mixed martial arts (MMA) fight. This fight took place on New Year's Eve in 2003. He fought against a Japanese wrestler named Kazuyuki Fujita.
The rules for this fight were special. If the fighters were on the ground for 20 seconds, they would be stood back up. This rule helped Mayfield because he was not as skilled at grappling (wrestling on the ground). However, Fujita was still able to win the fight. He used a chokehold to make Mayfield unconscious while they were standing in the second round.
