Boxing Career Highlights
Imamu Mayfield started his professional boxing career in 1994. He quickly became a well-known boxer in New Jersey, often fighting in local events.
Winning a World Title
In 1997, Imamu Mayfield won the IBF Cruiserweight Title. This was a big achievement for him! He won this title by defeating Uriah Grant. For his first defense of the title, Mayfield traveled to England. There, he successfully defended his title by knocking out the undefeated British champion, Terry Dunstan.
Losing and Regaining Titles
The next year, Mayfield had to defend his title against Arthur Williams. He lost the IBF title in the ninth round. In 2000, he got a chance to fight for another major title, the WBC Cruiserweight Title, against Juan Carlos Gomez. However, he lost this fight by knockout in the third round.
After this, Mayfield signed with a new team. He then won the IBF USBA Cruiserweight Title in Atlantic City, New Jersey. He achieved this by knocking out Gary Wilcox. The following year, he fought Jorge Fernando Castro in a fight to decide who would challenge for the IBF Cruiserweight Title, but he lost.
Moving to Heavyweight
In 2002, Imamu Mayfield decided to move up to the Heavyweight division. This meant he would be fighting bigger and heavier opponents. In his first heavyweight fight, he was much smaller than his opponent, Peter Ohkello, but he still managed to win clearly. Ohkello later went on to fight for a world title.
Mayfield had a draw with Taurus Sykes in 2003. However, he lost to Lawrence Clay-Bey in 2004. After this loss, he decided to move back down to the Cruiserweight division. He later moved back up to heavyweight again. In 2006, he fought Alexander Povetkin and lost. He also lost to another rising boxer, Johnathon Banks.
Mixed Martial Arts Fight
Besides boxing, Imamu Mayfield also competed in one mixed martial arts (MMA) fight. This happened on New Year's Eve in 2003, at an event called Inoki Bom-Ba-Ye 2003. He fought against a Japanese wrestler named Kazuyuki Fujita.
The rules for this fight were a bit special. If the fighters were on the ground for more than 20 seconds, the referee would make them stand up. This rule was put in place to make the fight more fair for Mayfield, as he was a boxer and not as skilled in ground fighting. However, Fujita was able to use a special hold called an arm-triangle choke while they were still standing. This caused Mayfield to become unconscious, and he lost the fight in the second round.
