Americans are people who are citizens of the United States. They come from many different backgrounds and have various beliefs. This is because people have moved to the U.S. from all over the world.

Some groups also became American when the United States grew bigger in the late 1800s. These include people from Hawaii, Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines. The Philippines is now its own country.

Besides living in the United States, Americans and people whose families came from America live all over the world. It is thought that between three and seven million Americans live outside the U.S.

Many Americans have ancestors from Europe. More people now have roots in Latin America and Asia than ever before. About 13% of Americans have African heritage. People from many cultures, religions, and ethnic groups live in the U.S. This is why the United States is often called a "Melting Pot." It's a place where many cultures mix together.

The United States is a very diverse country. The U.S. Census Bureau, which counts people in the country, officially recognizes six main groups for keeping track of information. These groups are White, American Indian and Alaska Native, Asian, Black or African American, Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander.

The current population of Americans in the U.S. is about 329.5 million people.

Who Are Americans?

Americans are people who belong to the United States. This means they are citizens of the country. Being a citizen gives you certain rights and responsibilities. The United States is known for its freedom and opportunities.

A Mix of Cultures

The United States is famous for being a "Melting Pot." This means that people from many different countries and cultures have come to live here. They bring their traditions, languages, and foods with them. Over time, these different cultures mix together, creating a unique American culture.

  • People have moved to the U.S. from every continent.
  • This mix makes the U.S. a very diverse place.
  • You can find many different languages spoken.
  • Many types of food and music are popular.

Where Do Americans Come From?

Most Americans have family histories that trace back to other parts of the world.

  • Many Americans have ancestors who came from Europe.
  • The number of people with roots in Latin America and Asia is growing.
  • About 13 out of every 100 Americans have African heritage.

Some groups became American without moving. This happened when the U.S. expanded its land. For example, people in Hawaii and Puerto Rico became Americans this way.

Americans Around the World

Americans do not just live in the United States. Many Americans live in other countries too. They might be working, studying, or traveling. It is estimated that millions of Americans live outside the U.S.

American Diversity

The United States is a very diverse country. This means there are many different kinds of people living here. The government keeps track of this diversity for information.

Official Groups in the U.S.

The U.S. Census Bureau helps count and understand the people in the country. They officially recognize six main groups for statistics:

  • White
  • American Indian and Alaska Native
  • Asian
  • Black or African American
  • Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander

This helps the government understand the different populations. It also helps them make decisions for everyone.
