Hacienda Heights is a suburban community in Los Angeles County, California, United States. It's a place where many people live and travel to nearby cities for work, often called a "bedroom community." In 2020, about 54,191 people lived here. It's one of the largest communities of its kind in Los Angeles County.

History of Hacienda Heights

Hacienda Heights is built on land that was once part of a large area called Rancho La Puente. This land was first managed by a nearby Spanish mission.

From Farms to Homes

In 1845, the Rancho was given to John A. Rowland and William Workman. Later, in the 1870s, a man named Elias "Lucky" Baldwin bought it. His family then sold the land in 1912.

In 1913, the area was divided up and named North Whittier Heights. It became known for growing avocados, citrus fruits, and walnuts. However, farming became difficult in the 1930s and early 1940s. This led to the area changing from farms to a place where people built homes.

Becoming a Community

Starting in the 1950s, more and more houses were built. Hacienda Heights became a residential area. In 1960, a public library branch opened. The next year, in 1961, the area was officially renamed Hacienda Heights. A local newspaper, the Hacienda Heights Highlander, started in 1964.

The hills around Hacienda Heights have sometimes had large brush fires. This happened in 1978, 1989, and 2020.

Geography and Climate

Hacienda Heights is located in the eastern part of the San Gabriel Valley. It shares borders with the City of Industry to the north, Whittier to the west, La Habra Heights to the south, and Rowland Heights to the east. The Pomona Freeway runs along its eastern side. Most of Hacienda Heights is made up of homes.

Area and Natural Features

The community covers about 11.2 square miles (28.9 square kilometers). Only a tiny part of this area is water.

The Puente Hills form a "green belt" along the southern and western edges of Hacienda Heights. A green belt is an area of natural land kept free from buildings. The highest point in the area is Workman Hill, which is about 1,391 feet (424 meters) tall. Residents sometimes see coyotes in the area.
