History of La Habra Heights
La Habra Heights is built on land that was once part of a large Mexican land grant called Rancho La Habra in 1839. Over the years, the land changed hands several times. In 1919, Edwin G. Hart bought a large part of the land and started developing what we now know as La Habra Heights.
The Story of the Hass Avocado
One of the most famous things to come from La Habra Heights is the Hass avocado! This popular fruit was discovered by Rudolph Hass right here in 1926.
Rudolph Hass bought some avocado seeds and planted them on his property. One of these seeds grew into a tree that produced unusual, bumpy fruit. His children loved the taste of these avocados. As the tree grew more fruit, Hass started selling them to his co-workers.
The Hass avocado quickly became a hit. Chefs in nearby Pasadena bought the new, nutty-tasting fruit for a high price. In 1935, Rudolph Hass got a patent for his special tree. He worked with a nursery to grow and sell more trees from cuttings of his original plant.
The Hass avocado was different from other types. It produced fruit all year round, had a longer shelf life, and tasted richer because it had more oil. Because of these great qualities, the Hass avocado became incredibly popular. By the early 2000s, it made up about 80% of all avocados grown worldwide!
The original "mother tree" of the Hass avocado lived for 76 years in La Habra Heights. It was cut down in 2002 after getting sick. Today, two plaques mark the spot where this famous tree once grew.
From 2010 to 2013, and again starting in 2018, La Habra Heights celebrated its famous fruit with an Annual La Habra Heights Avocado Festival.
