Profession Colonial Administrator

Captain Sir Arthur Henderson Young (born 31 October 1854 – died 20 October 1938) was an important British official who worked in different parts of the British Empire. He held many high-ranking positions, including being the Governor of the Straits Settlements and the British High Commissioner in Malaya.

About His Life

Family and Early Years

Arthur Henderson Young was the son of Colonel Keith Young.

On 5 November 1885, he married Lady Evelyn Anne Kennedy. She was the daughter of Archibald Kennedy, 2nd Marquess of Ailsa.

Education and Military Service

Young went to school at Edinburgh Academy. He also studied at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst, which is a famous military academy.

After his studies, he joined the army as a sub-lieutenant in a group called the 27th Inniskillings.

His Career as an Administrator

Starting in Cyprus

In 1878, Arthur Young began working for the British government in its colonies. This was known as the Colonial Service. His first job was to lead a military police unit in a place called Cyprus.

He spent 27 years working in Cyprus. During this time, he held many different important roles. He was an Assistant Commissioner, then a Commissioner in different cities like Paphos and Famagusta. He also worked as the Director of Survey and Forest Officer. Later, he became the Chief Secretary to the Government of Cyprus. This meant he was a very senior official helping to run the government there.

Working in Elections

In 1883, Young tried to get elected to the new Legislative Council in Cyprus. He didn't win, getting only a small number of votes. He tried again in 1891. This time, his attempt to get elected caused some debate. Even though he wasn't elected, he successfully argued in court that the election results should be partly cancelled because of unfair actions.

Moving to the Straits Settlements

Arthur Young also temporarily managed the government of Cyprus several times between 1895 and 1904. In 1902, he went on a special trip to St. Vincent in the West Indies.

He then became the Colonial Secretary of the Straits Settlements on 29 June 1906. He held this important job until 1911. The Straits Settlements were a group of British territories in Southeast Asia, including Singapore.

From 1911 to 1920, he served as the British High Commissioner in Malaya and the Governor of the Straits Settlements. These were very high-ranking positions, making him a key leader in the region.

Awards and Honours

Sir Arthur Henderson Young received several special awards for his service:

  • In 1897, he was made a Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George (CMG).
  • In November 1908, he became a Knight Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George (KCMG). This meant he could use "Sir" before his name.
  • In 1916, he was given an even higher honour: Knight Grand Cross of the Order of St Michael and St George (GCMG).
  • In 1918, he was also made a Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire (KBE).
