Artic, Indiana facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Artic is a small, quiet place in DeKalb County, Indiana, in the United States. It is known as an unincorporated community. This means it's a group of homes and businesses that don't have their own local government, like a city or town does. Instead, it's part of the larger county.

People sometimes spelled its name as Arctic in the past.

History of Artic

Artic has a simple but interesting history. A long time ago, in 1845, a post office was opened there. This was an important place where people could send and receive letters and packages. The post office stayed open for many years, helping the community connect with the outside world.

However, in 1903, the post office closed down. This often happened as transportation improved and people could travel more easily to larger towns with bigger post offices.

Why the Name Artic?

The name "Artic" likely came from the Arctic, which is the very cold region around the North Pole. It's not clear why the community was named after such a cold place, especially since Indiana has much milder weather!
