Artic, Washington facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Artic is a small place in Grays Harbor County, Washington, in the United States. It is called an "unincorporated community," which means it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town does. Instead, it's managed by the county.

The Story of Artic's Name

The community of Artic got its name from a person! It was meant to be named after Mrs. Arta Saunders. However, when postal workers were writing down the name for the new post office, they made a small mistake. They wrote "Artic" instead of "Arta." This spelling error was never fixed, and so the community became known as Artic.

When Was the Post Office Open?

A post office was first set up in Artic in the year 1887. It helped people send and receive letters and packages. The post office stayed open for many years, serving the community until 1907, when it finally closed down.
