Artspace Aotearoa (also known as Artspace NZ before) is a cool art gallery in Auckland, New Zealand. You can find it on Karangahape Road in a part of the city called Newton. The gallery first opened its doors in 1987. It focuses on showing modern art from New Zealand and other countries around the world.

It's good to know that Artspace Aotearoa is different from Depot Artspace. Depot Artspace is a place in Devonport where artists work and share ideas.

How Artspace Aotearoa Works

A special group called a "charitable trust" runs Artspace Aotearoa. This group has a board of trustees. These trustees choose a director to lead the gallery. Each director usually works for up to three years. During their time, they decide which art shows and projects the gallery will feature.

Having new directors often helps the gallery stay fresh and exciting. It means new ideas and different kinds of art are always being shown. Some of the past directors include Mary-Louise Browne and Priscilla Pitts. Today, the artist and curator Ruth Buchanan is the director.

What You Can See and Do

Artspace Aotearoa is a special kind of gallery. Because it's run by a trust, it can support new artists. These artists might not have shown their work in big galleries yet. Artspace gives them a chance to show their creative and sometimes unusual art.

Even though they help new artists, Artspace also features works by many famous New Zealand artists. The gallery has a public reading room too. This is a quiet place where you can research and learn more about art. They also offer many educational programs for people to learn about art.

For several years in the early 2000s, Artspace also hosted a music festival. It was called "ARTSPACE/alt.music" and featured experimental music.

Many artists have shown their work at Artspace Aotearoa. Some of them include:

  • Billy Apple (in 1997, 2004, and 2015)
  • Yuki Kihara (in 2017)
  • Justine Kurland (in 2002)
  • Michael Parekowhai (in 1999)
  • Peter Robinson (in 1998 and 2006)
  • Ava Seymour (in 1997)
  • Saul Steinberg (in 2012)
  • Shannon Te Ao (in 2017)
  • Francis Upritchard (in 2005)
  • Ronnie van Hout (in 1997)

In 2021, Artspace Aotearoa held a special event called When The Dust Settles. It was a fundraiser to help the gallery. This event featured art from 34 important artists. Many of these artists had shown their work at Artspace before. It was a way to celebrate the gallery's history and look to its future.
