Arun Kumar Choudhury (born 6 January 1923 – died 6 September 1987) was a very important scientist in India. He helped start the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Calcutta. He was a pioneer, meaning he was one of the first and most important people, in both analog and digital computing starting in the 1950s. Today, special lectures are held at different Indian universities to remember his amazing work.

A Pioneer in Computing

Arun Kumar Choudhury played a key role in bringing computer technology to India. He was involved in building India's very first analog computer. Analog computers use physical models to solve problems, like a slide rule or a car's speedometer.

Making Computers Smarter

Dr. Choudhury is well-known for his work on making computers more efficient and reliable. He studied how to improve "switching circuits," which are like the tiny on/off switches inside computers that help them process information. His research helped make these circuits work better and prevent errors. He also explored ways to make computers more "fault-tolerant," meaning they could keep working even if a small part broke down.

His Lasting Legacy

Dr. Choudhury's contributions to computer science are still celebrated today. Each year, special lectures about computer science are held in his memory. These lectures highlight his achievements and inspire new generations of scientists. The Information Technology College at Calcutta University is also named after him, honoring his pioneering spirit and dedication to the field.
