The Arupadai Veedu are six very special and sacred places dedicated to Lord Murugan, a popular Hindu deity. These places are believed to be where Lord Murugan gives his blessings in many different ways. The six main Arupadai Veedu are Thirupparankundram, Thiruchendur, Pazhani, Swamimalai, Thiruthani, and Pazhamudircholai. These holy sites are mentioned in ancient Tamil texts like the Thiruppugazh by Saint Arunagirinathar and the Thirumurugatruppadai by Saint Nakkirar.

The Six Sacred Homes of Lord Murugan

Lord Murugan is a beloved god, especially in South India. Each of his six special homes, or Arupadai Veedu, has a unique story and significance. Pilgrims visit these temples to seek his blessings and learn about his divine deeds.

Thirupparankundram: The Wedding Place

Thirupparankundram is the first of the Arupadai Veedu. This holy place is where Lord Murugan is believed to have married Deivanai, who is the daughter of Lord Indra, the king of the gods. Devotees visit this temple to receive blessings from Lord Murugan and his consort, Deivanai.

Thiruchendur: The Place of Victory

Thiruchendur is a very important coastal temple. It is famous as the place where Lord Murugan defeated the powerful demon Surapadma. After his victory, Lord Murugan performed a special prayer (Shiva Pooja) to purify himself and give thanks. It is said that during this prayer, Lord Shiva asked Murugan to show his beautiful form to his devotees. That is why Lord Murugan is often seen here holding a flower, showing his peaceful and lovely appearance.

Pazhani: The Young Sage

Pazhani is the third sacred home, located on a hill. Here, Lord Murugan is seen in his youthful form, known as Balamurugan. The story goes that he was upset with his parents, Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, because he did not receive a special "fruit of knowledge." In his anger, he left his home and came to Pazhani. He holds a staff, which is why he is also called Baladandayudhapani, meaning "the young one with a staff."

Swamimalai: The Teacher of Wisdom

Swamimalai is unique because it is where Lord Murugan taught his own father, Lord Shiva, the meaning of the sacred sound "Om" and the secrets of creation. Because he acted as a teacher to his father, he is known as Swaminathan, meaning "the Lord of his own Lord." This temple highlights Murugan's wisdom and knowledge.

Thiruthani: The Place of Peace

Thiruthani is the fifth abode, known as a place where Lord Murugan found peace after his battles. It is also the place where he married Valli, a tribal princess. Lord Murugan is often called Valli Manohara here, meaning "the beloved of Valli." Devotees believe that visiting Thiruthani brings immense blessings and inner peace.

Pazhamudircholai: The Blesser of Poets

Pazhamudircholai is the sixth and final Arupadai Veedu, nestled in a beautiful forest. This is where Lord Murugan tested and blessed the famous Tamil poetess Avvaiyar. He appeared to her as a young boy and taught her a valuable lesson about knowledge. In this temple, Lord Murugan is seen with both his consorts, Valli and Deivanai, and is known as Valli Devasenapathi.
