The Demak Sultanate and Its Rulers
The Demak Sultanate was a powerful Islamic kingdom in Java. It played a big role in spreading Islam in the region. After the first sultan, Raden Patah, his son-in-law, Pati Unus, became ruler.
Early Struggles for the Throne
In 1521, Pati Unus led an attack against the Portuguese in Malacca. Sadly, he died during this battle. After his death, there was a disagreement over who should rule next. Trenggana, Pati Unus's younger brother, wanted to become the sultan.
Arya Penangsang's Family and Rise to Power
Prince Surowiyoto, also known as Raden Kikin, was Arya Penangsang's father. Raden Kikin had two sons: Arya Penangsang and Arya Mataram. Trenggana, on the other hand, had a son named Raden Mukmin, also known as Sunan Prawoto.
There was a big conflict between these families for control of the sultanate. Raden Mukmin (Sunan Prawoto) was involved in the death of Raden Kikin. This event helped Trenggana become the third Sultan of Demak.
After his father Raden Kikin's death, Arya Penangsang took over his father's position. He became the Duke of Jipang. At this time, Arya Penangsang was only 16 years old. A wise advisor named Patih Mat Ahun helped him govern. Four years later, in 1525, Arya Penangsang became the official ruler of Jipang when he was 20.
Trenggana's Reign and Demak's Decline
Trenggana became the Sultan of Demak in 1521. He ruled for many years. His reign ended in 1546 when he passed away in Panarukan. He was trying to attack the Portuguese again, continuing the fight that Pati Unus had started.
The End of Arya Penangsang's Rule
In 1554, Arya Penangsang faced a major challenge. He was defeated by troops sent by the Adipati Pajang, who was a powerful leader from the Pajang region. With Arya Penangsang's defeat, the Demak Sultanate lost its power. Soon after, a new kingdom called the Kingdom of Pajang was established.
