Ascensión Esquivel Ibarra was an important leader in Costa Rica. He was born in Nicaragua on May 10, 1844. Later, in 1869, he became a citizen of Costa Rica. He served as the President of Costa Rica from 1902 to 1906. Before becoming president, he was a Lawyer and a university professor. After his time as president, he also led the Supreme Court of Costa Rica from 1917 to 1920.
Becoming President of Costa Rica
Ascensión Esquivel Ibarra first tried to become president in 1889. He did not win that election. However, he decided to run again in the 1901 elections. This time, he won! His presidency began in 1902. It was his only time serving as president.
What He Did as President
When Esquivel Ibarra became president, Costa Rica's economy was still growing. Despite this, his government made important progress.
- Building the Pacific Railroad: They continued working on the railroad to the Pacific. This railroad was very important for moving goods and people across the country.
- National Anthem: His government also helped establish the official words for the Costa Rican national anthem. This was a big step for the country's identity.
