The Ashby Street Car Barn, also known as the Ashby Street Trolley Barn, is a cool old building in Atlanta, Georgia. It used to be a special garage for electric streetcars, often called trolleys. Think of it like a big parking and repair shop for these old-fashioned trains that ran on city streets!

What is the Ashby Street Trolley Barn?

This historic building was built in 1927. It replaced an older building from 1904. The Ashby Street Car Barn was super important for the Atlanta/Marietta interurban line. An "interurban" was a type of trolley that connected cities, like Atlanta and Marietta, not just different parts of one city.

A Busy Hub for Trolleys

The car barn was the main place where these interurban trolleys were fixed and kept in good shape. It had six tracks inside, all running side-by-side. This allowed many trolleys to be stored or worked on at the same time.

The trolleys were a big part of transportation back then. They helped people travel between towns for work, school, or fun.

The End of an Era

The interurban trolley line ran for many years. However, like many trolley systems, it eventually stopped operating. The last trolley ran on January 31, 1947. After that, the Ashby Street Car Barn was no longer used for its original purpose.

A New Life for the Old Barn

For many years, the building sat empty or was used for other things. But in 1998 and 1999, it got a major makeover! The old car barn was renovated and turned into modern lofts, which are like apartments, and even a brewery.

This renovation was part of a bigger project called the King Plow Arts Center. This center helps bring art and creative businesses to the area.

A Historic Landmark

Because of its important history and unique design, the Ashby Street Car Barn was added to the National Register of Historic Places on August 6, 1998. This means it's recognized as a special building that's important to the history of the United States. It's a great example of how old buildings can be given a new life while still remembering their past.
