Ashwin Sundar (born 27 July 1985 – died 18 March 2017) was a talented race car driver from India. He was born in Madras (now called Chennai), Tamil Nadu. Ashwin was very active in racing from 2005 until his death. He won many national championships in different types of racing. These included Go-Karts, special open-wheel cars called Formula Cars, motorcycles, and regular cars known as Saloon cars.

Ashwin's Racing Career

Ashwin Sundar started his racing journey by winning big. He became the MRF Formula Mondial Go-Kart National champion two years in a row, in 2003 and 2004. Go-karting is often where many professional racers begin.

Early Car and Motorcycle Racing

In 2004, Ashwin started racing in bigger cars. He made his debut in single-seater Formula cars like the Formula Maruti and Formula LGB. These cars are built just for racing, with open wheels and a single seat for the driver. He finished 4th in the Indian championship that year.

The next year, 2005, he also showed his skill in motorcycle racing. He was the 2nd runner-up in the 150cc 4-stroke class at the Ucal National Road Racing Championship.

Becoming a Champion

Ashwin had a fantastic year in 2006. He became the Indian champion in both 115cc and 150cc 4-stroke motorcycle classes for TVS Racing. He was also named the Champion of Champions in India. That same year, he did well in international motorcycle racing, finishing 1st runner-up in the FIM Asia Road Racing Championship. He also placed 2nd runner-up in two Formula car categories: Formula LGB Hyundai and Formula LGB.

He continued his winning streak in 2007, becoming the Indian champion in both Formula LGB Hyundai and Formula LGB Swift car categories.

More National Titles

Ashwin kept winning national titles in different Formula car series:

  • 2009: National Champion in Formula Rolon Chevrolet (1600cc).
  • 2010: MRF Formula 1600 International Challenge champion.
  • 2011: He won the MRF Formula 1600 International Challenge again.
  • 2012: National Champion in F4.
