Assaf "Assi" Dayan (Hebrew: אסף "אסי" דיין‎; born November 23, 1945 – died May 1, 2014) was a famous Israeli film director, actor, and screenwriter. He also worked as a producer.

Life and Family

Assi Dayan was the youngest son of two very well-known Israelis. His father was Moshe Dayan, a famous Israeli general and defense minister. His mother was Ruth Dayan, who was known for her work as a peace activist.

Assi had two older siblings. His sister, Yael Dayan, born in 1939, became a politician and writer. His brother, Ehud (Udi) Dayan, born in 1942, is a sculptor.

After serving in the military, Assi studied philosophy and English literature at Hebrew University. He then decided to become an actor. This path later led him to become a director as well.

Assi Dayan was married and divorced four times. He had four children. His first marriage was to Aharona Melkind, and they had a daughter named Amalia and a son named Avner. With his second wife, actress Caroline Langford, he had a son named Lior. He also had a daughter named Assia from a relationship with Augusta Neumann. His fourth wife, Vered Tandler Dayan, who was a ceramic artist, even made a documentary film about him called Living, Period.

In 2009, Assi Dayan had a serious heart attack. He passed away on May 1, 2014, at his home in Tel Aviv.

Assi Dayan had a long and successful career in movies and television. He was known for both his acting and his directing skills.

In 1967, Assi Dayan became a well-known actor in Israel. He starred in the movie He Walked Through the Fields. This film was based on a famous Israeli novel and play. That same year, he appeared in Scouting Patrol, a movie about brave soldiers.

In 1969, he acted in an American movie called A Walk with Love and Death. This film was set in medieval France. He also played Giora Geter, a pub owner, in the movie Into the Night.

Assi Dayan also had an important role in the 1984 film Beyond the Walls. This movie was seen as a very important film in Israeli political cinema. He also acted in Operation Thunderbolt. This movie was about the famous Israeli rescue mission in Entebbe.

One of his most famous roles was as Dr. Reuven Dagan. He played this character in the TV drama series BeTipul. This show was so popular that it was later made into an American version by HBO called In Treatment. By 2008, Assi Dayan had acted in about 50 films and TV shows.

Directing Films

Assi Dayan also directed 16 films. In 1976, he directed Giv'at Halfon Eina Ona. This was a comedy about military reservists in the Sinai desert.

In 1992, he wrote and directed Life According to Agfa. This movie showed what life was like in a pub in Tel Aviv. The film was nominated for a big award called the Golden Bear at the 43rd Berlin International Film Festival. It also won a special mention. In 1999, he was part of the jury at the 49th Berlin International Film Festival. This meant he helped decide which films won awards.

Awards and Recognition

Assi Dayan received many awards for his work. He won the Israeli Academy Award for Best Actor for his role in the movie Mr. Baum. In 1998, he was given a special lifetime achievement award. This award was presented at the Jerusalem International Film Festival. Many Israeli critics also said that his role in the film Time of Favor was the best acting performance of his career.
