Think of it like the "Oscar" for the best movie at this festival! The Golden Bear is one of the most famous film awards in the world. It is as prestigious as the Palme d'Or and the Golden Lion from other big festivals. The award is shaped like a bear because the bear is the official animal symbol of Berlin. History of the Golden Bear Award
The Berlin International Film Festival started in 1951. In the very first years, from 1951 to 1955, different groups decided who won the Golden Bear.
- In 1951, a group from West Germany chose the winners. They gave out five Golden Bears for different types of films.
- From 1952 to 1955, the audience members themselves got to vote for their favorite films!
But things changed in 1956. A big international organization for film producers, called the Fédération Internationale des Associations de Producteurs de Films, officially recognized the festival. Since then, a special international jury, made up of film experts from around the world, has chosen the Golden Bear winner.
The Golden Bear Statuette
The Golden Bear award is a beautiful statuette of a bear standing on its back legs. This design was created in 1932 by a German artist named Renée Sintenis. It later became the symbol of the festival. The statuettes have been made by an art foundry called Hermann Noack since the festival began.
The original award was redesigned to be a bit larger in 1960. The bear in the new design has its left arm raised, which is different from the older version.
As of 2010, the bear statuette is about 20 centimeters (almost 8 inches) high. It stands on a base where the name of the winning film is carved. The statuette is made of a bronze core, which is then covered with a shiny layer of gold. The total weight of the award is about 4 kilograms (around 9 pounds)!
