About Carla Simón's Life
Carla Simón was born on December 22, 1986, in Barcelona, Spain. She grew up in a small village called Les Planes d'Hostoles in Catalonia. When she was six years old, her parents passed away. She then went to live with her uncle and his family in Garrotxa, a region in northern Catalonia.
In 2009, Carla finished her studies in film science at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. She also studied television work and later attended the London Film School. While in London, she directed a documentary called Born Positive and a short film named Lipstick.

Summer 1993: A Personal Story
Carla Simón's first full-length movie, Summer 1993 (2017), tells a story inspired by her own childhood. The film is about a young girl who is learning to cope after her parents' sudden death.
The movie was filmed over six weeks in the countryside of Garrotxa, where Carla grew up. Summer 1993 was first shown at the 67th Berlin International Film Festival. It won the award for Best Debut Film there. The movie also received many other awards, including the Golden Biznaga for Best Film at the Málaga Film Festival. It also won the Goya Award for Best New Director. Spain chose this film to represent the country for Best Foreign Film at the 90th Academy Awards.
Alcarràs: A Golden Bear Winner
Carla Simón's second movie, Alcarràs (2022), won the Golden Bear award at the 72nd Berlin International Film Festival. This was a big achievement, as it was the first Catalan-language film to win this prestigious award.
The film tells the story of a family who grows peaches in Catalonia. It shows how their traditional farming life is changing. Alcarràs was also chosen as Spain's entry for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film at the 95th Academy Awards.
Romería: Her Latest Work
In 2025, Carla Simón's third film, Romería, was chosen for the main competition at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival. It was nominated for the Palme d'Or, which is a very important award. This was Carla's first film to be in the main competition at Cannes.
Romería is partly based on Carla's own life. It follows a young orphaned woman who travels to Vigo to learn more about her biological father's past in the early 1990s.
