This year was special because two sequel movies, Avatar: The Way of Water and Top Gun: Maverick, were nominated for Best Picture. It was the first time two sequels were nominated in the same year. Also, these were the first two movies to earn over $1 billion worldwide and both be nominated for Best Picture.

These included Hong Chau, Stephanie Hsu, and the winners Ke Huy Quan and Michelle Yeoh.

Judd Hirsch, nominated for The Fabelmans, had the longest time between his Oscar nominations. His last nomination was in 1980!
At 90 years old, John Williams became the oldest person ever nominated for a competitive Oscar. It was his 53rd nomination, breaking his own record as the most nominated living person. Only Walt Disney has more nominations.

About the Ceremony
The team that put together the Oscars show was announced in February 2023. This team included producers, the music director Rickey Minor, and writers. They all worked to make the show run smoothly.
One big change this year was the color of the red carpet. For the first time, it wasn't red! It was a soft, light color called champagne. This change was made to help the lighting look better as the sun went down. It helped make the transition from daytime outside to evening inside the theater much smoother.
