Stephanie Ann Hsu (pronounced SHOO; born November 25, 1990) is an American actress. She became very well known for her two roles in the movie Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022). In this film, she played Joy Wang and Jobu Tupaki. Her performance earned her a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, which is a very important award in movies.
Stephanie Hsu studied acting at NYU Tisch School of the Arts. She started her career in experimental theater, which is a type of theater that tries new and different ideas. Later, she performed on Broadway, which is the highest level of theater in New York City. On Broadway, she was the first to play Christine Canigula in Be More Chill (2015–2019) and Karen the Computer in SpongeBob SquarePants: The Broadway Musical (2016–2017). She also had regular roles in TV shows like The Path (2016–2018) on Hulu and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (2019–2023) on Amazon Prime.

Early Life and Education
Stephanie Hsu was born in Torrance, California. Her mother raised her as a single parent. Stephanie's grandmother moved from Mainland China to Taiwan to escape the Chinese Civil War. Later, Stephanie's mother moved to the United States to get a better education.
Stephanie went to Palos Verdes Peninsula High School. After high school, she moved to Brooklyn, New York, to study theater. She graduated from NYU Tisch School of the Arts in 2012. She also trained with a group called the Atlantic Theater Company.

Stephanie Hsu started her acting journey in experimental theater and comedy shows.
Early TV and Theater Roles
From 2013 to 2015, Stephanie appeared regularly on the MTV comedy show Girl Code. Her first regular TV role was as Joy Armstrong in the Hulu series The Path.
In 2012, Stephanie was asked to read for the part of Karen, the computer, in the first reading of The SpongeBob Musical. She later played this character on stage in Chicago in 2016. She then made her big debut on Broadway in 2017.
Stephanie also created the main character of Christine Canigula in the very first show of Be More Chill. This was at the Two River Theater in Red Bank, New Jersey. She played this role again when the show moved off-Broadway in 2018 and then to Broadway in 2019. For her performance, she was nominated for the Lucille Lortel and Drama Desk Awards.
Breakthrough in Film and TV
In 2019, Stephanie Hsu joined the cast of the Amazon Prime series The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel for its third season. She played the character Mei Lin. She and the other actors in the show won a SAG Award for Best Ensemble in a Comedy Series in 2020. Stephanie also starred in an independent movie called Asking for It in 2020.
Her biggest role came in 2022 in the movie Everything Everywhere All at Once. In this film, she played two important characters: Joy Wang, the daughter of Michelle Yeoh's character, and Jobu Tupaki, a powerful villain. The movie was shown at the 2022 South by Southwest (SXSW) festival and was highly praised. Critics and audiences loved Stephanie's performance.
She won the Independent Spirit Award for Best Breakthrough Performance. She was also nominated for many other awards, including the Critics' Choice Award, the Screen Actors Guild Award, and the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. In June 2023, she was invited to join the Academy, which is the group that gives out the Oscar awards.
In 2023, Stephanie Hsu appeared as a guest star in an episode of the Peacock series Poker Face. Later that year, she starred in the film Joy Ride. She also appeared in the Disney+ show American Born Chinese. In this show, she reunited with her co-stars from Everything Everywhere All at Once, including Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan, and James Hong.
