Stephanie Ann Hsu (born November 25, 1990) is an American actress. She became famous for playing two different characters, Joy Wang and Jobu Tupaki, in the 2022 movie Everything Everywhere All at Once. Her performance was so good that she was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.
Hsu studied acting at the NYU Tisch School of the Arts. She started her career in experimental theater. Later, she starred in big shows on Broadway. She was the first to play Christine Canigula in the musical Be More Chill and Karen the Computer in SpongeBob SquarePants: The Broadway Musical. She also had important roles in the TV shows The Path and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.

Early Life and School
Stephanie Hsu was born in Torrance, California. She was raised by her single mother. Her grandmother had moved from mainland China to Taiwan during the Chinese Civil War. Hsu's mother later came to the United States to get a better education.
Hsu went to Palos Verdes Peninsula High School. After high school, she moved to Brooklyn, New York, to become an actress. She graduated from NYU Tisch School of the Arts in 2012. She also trained at the Atlantic Theater Company.
Acting Career
Starting on Stage and TV
Hsu began her career acting in unique plays and comedy shows. From 2013 to 2015, she appeared on the MTV comedy series Girl Code. Her first major TV role was playing Joy Armstrong in the Hulu series The Path.
In 2012, Hsu was asked to read for the part of Karen, the talking computer, in The SpongeBob Musical. She played the character on stage in Chicago in 2016. In 2017, she made her debut on Broadway in the same role.
Hsu also starred in the musical Be More Chill. She played the main character, Christine Canigula, when the show first opened. She performed in the show both off-Broadway and on Broadway. For this role, she was nominated for a Lucille Lortel Award and a Drama Desk Award.
Gaining More Fame
In 2019, Hsu joined the cast of the popular Amazon Prime show The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel as Mei Lin. She and the other actors won a Screen Actors Guild Award for their work together.
Her biggest role came in 2022 in the movie Everything Everywhere All at Once. She played two very different parts: Joy Wang, the daughter of Michelle Yeoh's character, and Jobu Tupaki, a powerful villain. The movie was a huge hit, and critics loved Hsu's performance.
For this role, she won an Independent Spirit Award for Best Breakthrough Performance. She was also nominated for a Critics' Choice Award, a Screen Actors Guild Award, and an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. In 2023, she was invited to join the Academy, the group that gives out the Oscars.
Recent Work
In 2023, Hsu appeared in an episode of the Peacock series Poker Face. That same year, she starred in the comedy movie Joy Ride. She also appeared in the Disney+ show American Born Chinese. This show reunited her with her Everything Everywhere All at Once co-stars Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan, and James Hong.
